About Padang
A Room Where the Thinking Can Happen Quietly
Padang was founded to give Singapore adults a space to think carefully about their financial picture — free from salesmanship, with enough time and good company to make the thinking worthwhile.
Back to HomeHow Padang Began
The name comes from the open field at the heart of old Singapore — a place where people have gathered, without walls, to think and to discuss. That spirit is what we try to carry into our seminar rooms.
Padang was founded in 2012 by a small group of educators and financial practitioners who noticed a gap: most financial education in Singapore was aimed at younger adults building wealth, or at very high-net-worth individuals with complex structures. The person in their late forties or fifties — steady, careful, thinking seriously about retirement — was largely underserved.
The programmes we designed were built around that specific audience. They begin from the Singapore household's actual picture: a CPF account that is now maturing, a flat that has been the family's anchor for twenty years, children perhaps finishing their studies, parents perhaps needing more attention. They address the questions that arise at that stage of life in Singapore, with the detail and the patience those questions deserve.
Over the years the programmes have been refined through the conversations that happen in the room — the questions that come up, the things that participants find helpful, the points where clarity makes a real difference. What we teach today reflects what we have learned from several thousand people sitting across the table and thinking things through with us.
Our Mission
To give adults aged forty and above the understanding they need to look at their household's financial picture clearly — so that the decisions ahead of them can be made with care and confidence, without pressure and without haste.
Our Position
Padang is an educational organisation. We do not hold a financial advisory licence and we do not recommend specific financial products. Our purpose is to help participants read the landscape more clearly. What they decide to do with that understanding is entirely their own affair.
Our Values
- Plain language, not jargon
- Sufficient time for every question
- No product recommendations
- Respect for the reader's own judgement
- Discretion with personal information
The People in the Room
Our educators bring backgrounds in financial practice, adult education and Singapore policy — and the patience that comes from years of listening carefully.
Leonard Wong
Lead Educator & Founding Director
Leonard spent eighteen years in the Singapore financial services industry before founding Padang in 2012. He leads the Retirement Planning Course and the Private Review programme, and has a particular interest in CPF policy and its household implications.
Sujatha Nair
Programme Coordinator & Educator
Sujatha brings a background in adult learning design and spent several years with a Singapore statutory board before joining Padang. She leads the Verandah Discussions and oversees the written materials for all three programmes.
Clement Toh
Research & Content Specialist
Clement tracks changes to CPF rules, SRS regulations and MediShield Life provisions and translates those changes into updated programme materials. He also handles enquiries for participants who have follow-up questions after a session.
Our Standards
The principles that govern how we design and deliver our programmes.
No Conflicts of Interest
Padang receives no commissions or referral fees from any financial institution. Programme fees are the only income we derive from participants. This is not a policy that changes.
Current, Accurate Materials
All programme content is reviewed annually and updated whenever CPF rules, SRS limits, MediShield Life provisions or relevant tax regulations change. Participants receive up-to-date printed materials at each session.
Small Group Sizes
Introductory and course sessions are capped at twelve participants. The Private Review accommodates only one household per programme. These limits exist so that every question gets proper attention.
Personal Data Handled with Care
We hold only the information necessary to manage your enrolment and correspond with you. We do not share it with any third party for commercial purposes. Our practices follow the Singapore Personal Data Protection Act.
Plain-Language Commitment
Every document, presentation and conversation in our programmes is checked for plain language before use. Technical terms are explained when they appear. Nothing is assumed, and nothing is rushed.
Participant Feedback
Every programme ends with a written feedback form. Responses are reviewed by the lead educator and feed directly into programme revisions. The programmes improve because participants tell us what they actually found useful.
Financial Education in Singapore for Adults Approaching Retirement
Singapore's CPF framework is detailed and changes periodically. For adults in their forties and fifties, the decisions that need to be made — at fifty-five when the Retirement Account is created, at sixty-five when CPF LIFE begins, around the question of the Supplementary Retirement Scheme, around housing equity and possible rightsizing — are not abstract. They have real consequences for household income in retirement and for the family's overall position.
Padang works with adults at this stage of life. Our programmes are built around the Singapore framework as it actually operates, rather than as a general introduction to personal finance might present it. We cover CPF in the detail it deserves. We discuss MediShield Life and MediSave in the context of actual medical costs in later life. We consider the SRS as a tool worth understanding for those still in employment, and the question of housing as part of the total household picture.
The people who attend our programmes tend to be thoughtful adults who have handled their finances reasonably well and would like to be sure they are making the right choices in the years ahead. They are not looking to be sold anything. They want to understand the options in front of them — and to have their questions answered by someone who knows the material well and has the patience to explain it clearly.
That is what Padang offers. If that sounds like what you are looking for, we would be glad to hear from you.
